Water damage and global warming

Water is the basic element of life and nature but supplies are now running low for our planet. Converse to the increasing world population, accessibility to fresh water has been dropping increasingly. The figures are staggering, nearly 1.8 billion people in the world currently cannot access clean and safe water. The situation is predicted to worsen in a few years’ time to reach 2.8 billion people. Blame it on global warming.

There is an undisputed correlation between rising temperatures and increasing water scarcity globally. In a research by the International Panel Change it is expected that by 2100 the average global temperatures could rise as high as 4.5 degrees Celsius and speed up water evaporation. The results will be more flooding proceeded by droughts, and water pollution. Just how are water pumping station supposed to be adjusted?

Not only do we need to put new mechanisms in place to meet with the enormous demand, but the treatment plants also have to deal with effects of extreme temperatures and precipitation. In the case of the United States water and waste water treatment plants and pipes were intended for past climates, the unprecedented rise and fall of temperatures now puts such systems at risk of collapse. This could impact the distribution and quality of water that reaches our homes.

As sure as eggs is eggs fresh water sources will be in short supply with rising sea levels, intense precipitation and floods. As it stands right now only 2 percent of the world’s water is fresh, the rest is salty. Top of the fresh water sources include ground water and surface water including lakes and rivers. None of all these water sources are immune to rising temperatures and the strain of increasing demand both domestic and industrial. Scientists have concluded that the escalating temperatures will also instigate low in stream flows in rivers and lakes.

There is a growing need to re-evaluate systems in water pumping stations and piping. This can be done at reservoir facilities, water and waste water treatment plants so that we can be able to deal with the new level of contamination and still meet the new incised demand. It is understood that as temperature rises there is the unavoidable corrosion in pipes which may lead to contamination even at the point of distribution and in homes.

Restructuring also needs to be done in pumping stations that are used to remove water in flooded areas. In such cases there are massive amounts of water to be cleaned with high levels of contamination.
