Make a Paiute Deadfall Trap in 10 Minutes
When it comes to wilderness survival, knowing how to expertly build your own trap is key. But when your resources are limited and you’re short on time, how do you assemble a quick trap that will get the job done? Luckily, we’ve figured out a way to build a paiute deadfall trap that gets the job done and takes just 10 minutes to assemble. Check out the steps below to give it a try yourself, and be sure to leave your own trapping tips in the comments.
What you’ll need:
- Two straight sticks
- Thin trigger stick
- 2-inch stick (the toggle)
- 8 inches of string/cordage
- Weight (something flat and heavy)
Step 1: Locate a flat surface to set up your trap. A flat surface will keep your trap steady and keep your prey from escaping.
Step 2: Begin the framework for your trap. Twist one of your straight sticks into the ground. Rest the balance stick over the top, then wrap the cordage around it. Tie the toggle to the other end of the string.
Step 3: Rest a weight over the balance stick at a 45-degree angle. Setting up your weight at a 45-degree angle will allow the weight to fall at full force. (If it’s a heavier weight, it will hesitate when it falls.) Also keep in mind that the weight you use has to be heavier than the pray you’re trying to catch.
Step 4: Press the trigger stick between the weight and the toggle. If you have bait, stick it on your trigger stick before pressing it against the weight. (I like to use peanut butter for bait because most animals enjoy the sugar and protein it offers.)
Step 5: Narrow the angle of attack. Use debris to create a wall around one side of the trap so that the animal will not be able to escape.
