How to Make Waterproof Matches That Are Reliable In The Outdoors

Whether you’re preparing for a weekend camping trip, a natural disaster or the end of the world, knowing how to get a fire started is essential. A box of waterproof matches is possibly the most important fire starter supplies that you should have in your backpack or bug out bag.

You can’t rely on your box of matches to survive the outdoors on their own. They don’t mix well with wet conditions – and you often find wet conditions when hiking or camping. You slip and fall into a puddle getting your backpack wet, your tackle box gets knocked in the water by a big fish you pulled in, etc. Fortunately, there is a simple solution. You can waterproof your matches. (You can also buy matches that are already waterproof but it is so simple and inexpensive to make them, homemade waterproof matches are a great option.)

4 Ways To Make Homemade Waterproof Matches

Don’t have waterproof matches handy? You don’t have to buy expensive waterproof matches; instead, you can simply make your own waterproof matches, for a fraction of the cost! Using a box of matches and just a few common materials, you’ll be ready to start a fire in the pouring rain in no time! Find out how to waterproof matches on your own to have one of the best homemade fire starters.

Materials:

  • Matches
  • Nail Polish or Turpentine
  • Newspaper or sheet of paper

Method 1: Turpentine

The BEST & SAFEST method is to use turpentine. Turpentine has a higher “flash point” relative to Acetone, which is commonly used in nail polish. It also does not involve the use of flame as is needed in the wax or paraffin methods.

Step 1: Pour 2-3 large tablespoons of turpentine into a small glass.

Step 2. Place the matches head down into the turpentine and allow the matches to soak for 5 minutes. During this time, the turpentine will soak into the head as well as the stem, and all of the water will be driven off by the turpentine.

Step 3: Remove the matches and spread them out to dry out on a sheet of newspaper. Allow them to sit for about 20 minutes, or until dry. Matches treated in this way remain waterproof for several months or longer.

Method 2: Nail Polish

Step 1: Dip the head end of the match into clear nail polish far enough to cover at least an eighth of an inch (3 millimeters) of the stick below the head.

Step 2: Hold the match for a few seconds to allow the polish to dry, then place the match on a table so that the head is suspended off the edge of the surface.

Step 3: Place a sheet of newsprint on the floor to catch anything that may drip from the fire starters.
